ARTWORK
CONNECTIONS, BY PRESTON CAMPBELL

The design includes the 7 significant waterways which lie within the Yugambeh Language Group Region including the Logan River, Albert River, the Tweed River, The Nerang River, Coomera River, Pimpama River and the Tallebudgera creek. These waterways held significant cultural importance to all Clans in SER whose Country they run through and still maintain significant importance to everyone from all cultural backgrounds today.

The design particularly speaks to Dungulumba (Logan River) whose flow connects a majority of our SER, with its beginnings at the culturally significant Bagga Bagga (Mount Barney), flowing through Migunberri (Christmas Creek/border ranges), Mununjali (Beaudesert), Gugingin (Logan) Country before flowing out into the ocean of the Quandamooka (Redlands and Moreton Bay) peoples. Dungulumba also encompasses the significant waterways of Bilinooba (Albert River of Wangerriburra Country) and Tevoit Brook (Ugarapul Country).

The second part of “Connections” talks to the traditional path Saltwater Elders from Kombumerri (Gold Coast) would use in walking from The Spit, onto South Stradbroke Island and then on to Minjeribah (North Stradbroke Island). Canoe travel was also used from Bundjalung/Yugambeh (Tweed) Clans to Quandamook (Minjeribah) (North Stradbroke Island) which was a part of the Sea Eagle Songline “Connection”.

South East Region DoE Staff have worked alongside the Community, Preston Campbell (artist) and local Indigenous business Phyre Apparel to develop a special and unique Staff Polo for their region.

Across SER, connection to Community, Country, school and place is important to each of us in ensuring every student and child experiences success throughout their educational journey. In uniting in this body of work, the SER Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Team engaged with Preston Campbell to design an artwork representative of the Communities and places of cultural significance across our region to be utilised on a regional polo shirt of which, ALL educational staff are able to purchase and wear, to acknowledge and celebrate SER’s commitment to embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures.

SER staff acknowledge and pay respect to the Traditional Owners and ongoing Custodians of the lands on which our schools are built and where learning takes place. We pay our respects to Elders, past, present & emerging and recognise their continuing connection to Country and ways of learning over thousands of years.
